Victoria Camille is a dedicated native Detroiter and a passionate advocate for community safety and police accountability. As a candidate for Detroit District 7 Police Commissioner, she embodies the belief that the police force must operate under the strict subordination of civil authority, as stated in the Detroit City Charter.
Fueled by her commitment to fostering community engagement, Victoria co-founded the Grand River Community Block Club in 2020 to address neighbors’ desires for a safer, cleaner, and more peaceful neighborhood. As an active member of the National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement since 2022, she has participated in three national conferences focused on policing reforms. Victoria served as the Secretary to the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners in 2023, during which time she increased transparency around BOPC and DPD operations. She is also an integral member of the Coalition for Police Transparency and Accountability, working tirelessly to ensure that voices of the people are heard and respected in matters of public safety.
As the Board Secretary, Victoria drafted an ordinance for requiring police body worn camera footage to be released on a public website every time police use force. She continues to advocate alongside other community members for Detroit City Council to pass this ordinance.
Victoria testified on December 10, 2024 before the Michigan House of Representatives advocating for the passing of a bill package to reduce incidents of people being seriously injured or killed by police, reduce bias-based policing, and improve community trust of law enforcement.
In partnership with other CPTA members, Victoria drafted a First Amendment Activities policy for the Detroit Police Department, designed to protect people exercising their First Amendment rights in lawful rallies, marches, protests, and union strikes from harassment, retaliation, and other harm by law enforcement. The policy is under consideration by the DPD and the Board of Police Commissioners.
With Victoria as a Detroit Police Commissioner, you can trust in a leader who prioritizes community voices and champions transparency, accountability, and a vision for a safer Detroit.
