My name is Terry Taplin. I am a poet, caretaker, Berkeley City Councilmember, and lifelong Berkeley resident. This March, I am running for the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee on the Democrats for Affordable Housing slate. 

The Alameda County Democratic Central is the local vehicle of the California Democratic Party. It is responsible for electing Democrats to local office, engaging Alameda County Democratic voters, and advancing the goals of the Democratic Party. 

As a caretaker for a disabled parent, I witness firsthand the challenges everyday community members, especially the most vulnerable, face in everything from navigating the healthcare system to accessing reliable and inclusive transportation, and I know full well the barriers that limit the ability of everyday residents to participate in civic life. 

As a Berkeley City Councilmember, I am no stranger to tough decisions, challenging dialogue, and complex political, structural, and social problems. My experience in elected office and public service has given me the responsiveness necessary to engage Alameda County voters, especially young people, students, and historically marginalized communities, as well as an unwavering focus on critical issues that deeply impact Alameda County Democratic voters, including affordable housing and mobility justice, community safety, climate resilience, education equity, and economic justice. 

With civil rights, social justice, and our core Democratic values under threat nationwide, we cannot afford to overlook our local Democracy back home in Alameda County. Our turbulent times demand next-generation leaders with iron resolve and laser focus on solutions to local problems. Alameda County deserves a Democratic Central Committee that represents our community's diversity, uplifts everyday voters' voices, and delivers tangible results for Alameda County residents.

I am proud to be running alongside fellow housing champions throughout Assembly District 14: Albany City Councilmember Aaron Tiederman, Peralta Community College Trustee Dyana Delfín Polk, Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board Commissioner  Andy Kelley, and Legislative Aide and Union President James Chang. Together, we are Democrats for Affordable Housing.
