In 2023 the Wisconsin Supreme Court flipped away from conservatives for the first time in 15
years. As a result, Wisconsin now has fair legislative maps for the first time in decades, and the
court appears poised to overturn the state’s 175-year abortion ban, as well as roll back unconstitutional restrictions on collective bargaining.
However, all of that could come crashing down in April. One of the four liberal Justices on the
court is retiring - meaning an open seat contest will determine who controls the Wisconsin
Supreme Court. With former right-wing Attorney General Brad Schimel running on the conservative side, this is shaping up to be a razor tight race yet again.
Based on recent trends, we expect this race to be decided by fewer than 20,000 votes - and turnout from BIPOC communities around Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Racine may well make up the margin of victory here.
About: Power to the Polls is a Black-led organization created by civil rights leaders, faith leaders, labor unions, and activists across Wisconsin.
Our goal is to fundamentally change the way we organize and mobilize Black, Brown, and working-class communities in Wisconsin, remove barriers to the ballot box, and give power back to people who are all too often left
behind.
